Hansen (1854-1924) was born in Dithmarschen, Ger-many, and began his painting career in Hamburg, remaining there until 1876. Principally a watercolorist, Hansen excelled at painting horses, and his work has often been favorably compared with Remington's. Whether in oil or watercolor, details of costume are acurate, movement animated, facial expressions keenly expressive, and landscape touches bright and natura-listic. QUESTIONABLE COMPANIONS (1900) Indian and rancher are holding an animated conversation as their horses trot rapidly along. The flat land stretches out to violet and golden hills; a gully filled with foliage lies alongside the track; and patches of sage lean away from the wind. Shadows and gradations of color are particularly well handled here; the land has depth and contours, the sky reflects all the colors of earth. We are most interested, how-ever, in the distinctions between the two riders, including their horses; one with improvised rope bridle and reins, the other raising a proud head in leather harness. Other details to be noted here are the rancher's horned Western saddle and fringed leather gloves, the Indian's buckskin blouse and elaborate beaded boots, his knife, gun, and lariat.
