The fun thing about VWs is that the only thing holding your rear drum is a big castle nut and the only thing keeping that nut in place outside of what it's torqued to is a small cotter pin. Without that cotter pin the axle nut can back it's way off and your brake drum, with the wheel and tire attached, can fall off (and that's not hyperbole - it actually happens). So every time you have to take a castle nut off - replace the cotter pin. They're inexpensive and since they're made to be used once and replaced, it's silly not to. Do it once - do it right! What you get: 10 x N125451 - Cotter Pin - 5x45mm (the plating color on these will vary between silver and gold zinc) Applications: Beetle 1946-1977 Super Beetle 1971-1979 Bus 1950-1963 (only used on small nut - 36mm - rear axles. It's not uncommon to see small nut rear ends on later Buses or big nut rear ends on early Buses so be sure to check your Bus before ordering). Karmann Ghia 1956-1974 Type 3 1962-1973 Thing 1973-1974 Tech Notes: These fit all 36mm castle nuts but they're a touch short for the 46mm nuts that are used on 64-79 Buses. Be sure to torque the castle nut to the required torque and then a touch further so the cotter pin can go in. There are a few proper ways to install cotter pins - one with a end being bent in each direction radially around the nut while the other way is an end going back up over the axle shaft and the other towards the drum face.
