Description: This book offers a fully illustrated and detailed account of the part played by Warwickshire's airfields during the Second World War. The history of each airfield is described, including details about the squadrons and aircraft based at them, and the main operations carried out. The subject is brought vividly to life with evocative accounts, alongside photos of the airmen themselves and their aircraft. Between 1939 and 1945, Warwickshire's airfields were kept continuously busy in a variety of roles - all vital to the war effort. Initially these were mainly linked to aircraft and aero engine manufacture but, during the following three years, nine additional airfields were built to act as training bases, predominantly for crews destined for Bomber Command. From airfields such as Gaydon, Stratford-upon-Avon and Wellesbourne Mountford, the crews worked fast and hard to develop such dangerous skills as night navigation, bomb aiming and gunnery. They also learned to tackle emergencies such as internal fires and having to ditch in the sea. 'Nickelling' sorties - the dropping of propaganda leaflets - over France and Holland provided trainee crews with valuable experience above enemy occupied territory. And during the summer of 1942 many found themselves with their instructors on real missions such as Bomber Harris's 1,000 bomber raid on Cologne.
