An impressive historical and contemporary snapshot of the inventory of architecture in Wayne County, sponsored by the New York State Council on the Arts, in a series entitled Architecture Worth Saving in New York State. Note that a loose map insert of the county is missing. Let us establish at once that this book is not — nor does it attempt to be — a complete catalog of Wayne County's significant features. Instead, it aims to survey readily observable features of the Wayne County physical environment using a system which allows them to be readily stored and evaluated. One or more significant forms selected from the Wayne County environment are placed within each catalog compartment to exemplify how storing and evaluation might be carried out in other surveys. The great majority of the classified items are architectural (since research was conducted within the Architecture Worth Saving program of the New York State Council on the Arts), but the balance could be readily adjusted in favor of other observable features of the Wayne County landscape. A few ephemeral printed items and privately held records are included for their associative value, but the filing framework could obviously be used to classify any amount of such material. Since the catalog is intended to assist in establishing the significance of previously unappreciated features, it may bypass the familiar in favor of the unfamiliar. The reader who knows Wayne County will quickly recognize that some of the best surviving examples of architectural styles have been omitted and that only a few of the most important historic landmarks are represented.
