KSAN ART CARD SERIES Stock no.(9503, 9505) Printed in Canada Distributed by Canadian Native Prints Ltd., 775 Homer Street, Vancouver, B.C., Canada V6B 2W1 WE-GYET AND THE BEARS (9503): We-gyet, a mythical raven of Gitksan Indian legend, coveted the shiny fur coats of three bears he saw in a tree. He discarded all his feathers and gave them to the trees, but the bears escaped, one by one, leaving We-gyet with no choice but to put all his feathers in place as before. In this graphic illustration, Ken Mowatt expresses vitality and lyrical movement as he sets the traditional Northwest Coast Indian art form free from the confines of its classical boundaries. WE-GYET AND THE SEAL (9505): When seal invited We-gyet, the mythical raven of Gitksan Indian legend, to a salmon feast, he produced quantities of oil from his fire warmed hands, which he poured over the cooked fish. Trying to compete with seal, We-gyet managed only to burn and blacken his hands in the fire, thus giving all ravens black claws for evermore. Condition: NEAR MINT Smoke-free environment. Illustrations by Ken Mowatt express vitality and lyrical movement as he sets the traditional Northwest Coast Indian art form free from the confines of its classical boundaries (paraphrased). Mowatt is one of the formost artists at KSAN, and has contributed fifteen designs to a special volume of Gitksan legends entitled We-gyet, of which this is one. The original print from which this artcard was made is in the permanent collection of the KSAN Museum . Now internationally famous, KSAN is a replica of a Gitksan village, standing where Indian villages have stood for thousands of years. Within its old buildings are housed a museum, an exhibition hall, an art school for Indian artists, a shop selling traditional art and craft products, and a Feast House where visitors may watch colourful native dances and ceremonies. The community is a focal point of an exciting re-emergence of the cultures of Northwest Coast Indian peoples
