Description: *NOTE TO EBAY - THESE BOXES ARE EMPTY AND DO NOT CONTAIN ANY RESTRICTED AMMUNITION COMPONENTS*Up for your consideration is a two-piece set of empty replica Vietnam War era 10 ROUND MILITARY CONTRACT SHOTGUN SHELL BOXES with an OLIN / WESTERN CARTRIDGE 18.5MM FLECHETTE PLASTIC CASE label.Development of a 12 gauge shotshell loaded with steel darts, called "ice picks", started in early 1951 as a possible close-quarters combat replacement for the "00" Buck shotshell. Testing and refinement of the design continued through the 1950s. Then, in 1961, the Ordnance Division of Whirlpool Corp., with the backing of the Marine Corps, began work on their own 12 Ga. flechette-loaded shotshell. A small test lot was then sent to Vietnam in 1965 for field evaluation. During the same period, the 18.5MM Flechette shotshell was being produced by Olin/Western for couterinsurgency warfare use, followed by Olin/Winchester in 1966 with a 12 gauge Flechette cartridge often referred to as the "Beehive" round. Field testing in Vietnam of the Flechette cartridges continued through the late 1960s, but it was never produced in large quantities nor issued for widespread use. Each "Buy It Now" single purchase is for two unassembled cartons with a Western Cartridge Co. 18.5MM Flechette Plastic Case label. The lot numbers are hand stamped on the labels prior to shipping. The cartons will be shipped flat, with assembly instructions. I had a lot of these made, so if you want multiple sets, just change the auction quantity before you click on the "Buy It Now" button.
