Translations into English of the poetry of Johann Christian Friedrich Hölderlin (1770 – 1843), the German poet and philosopher - a key figure of German Romanticism. John Riley (1937–1978) was a Leeds-born poet who was associated with the British Poetry Revival. After graduating from Cambridge, he taught in the area and became acquainted with many of the poets who constituted the Cambridge group, a key element of the Revival. In 1966 he set up the Grosseteste Press with his friend Tim Longville, and in 1970 Riley retired from teaching and returned to Leeds to write full-time. Riley's poetry was influenced by Charles Olson and Osip Mandelstam. He was murdered in an altercation in a public toilet in Leeds in 1978. Very Good condition.
