Originally intended for release in 1987 as a follow-up to Sign o' the Times, it was abruptly pulled by Prince himself just before its scheduled release. He felt the album had a "dark energy" and decided to shelve it. He initially wanted "The Black Album" to be a gritty, funk-driven record in stark contrast to the pop-oriented Sign o’ the Times, as well as to challenge listeners with darker, edgier content.
