Wilkinson Royal Staffordshire Pottery Blue Polychrome Iris Pattern Sugar Bowl

Description: This fabulous antique sugar bowl was made by Wilkinson Ltd( Arthur J Millkinson, Ltd) of Burslem, Staffordshire, England in 1907 in the art nouveau transferware IRIS pattern. This is not multicolor transferware. It is technically called “clobbered” transferware meaning that there was a main transfer design in one color and the other colors were enamel paint applied on top of the transfer. Multi-colored transferware is when all of the design is in transfered but in two or three colors. This sugar bowl has cobalt blue transfer printed and hand painted orangish irises, light green, brownish & graygreen accents. Gold trimmed. Condition is great except there is a very small chip on the inner rim of the lid ( as shown in photo 11) and a repaired chip on the upper rim of the body (as shown in the photo 12). Some natural crazing inner. Otherwise, no chips, cracks or repairs. The bottom is a little bit unbalanced which is from manufacturing . Some gold wear and colors faded commensurate with age. Please see the pictures as they are part of my description. It measures approximately 8 1/4” handle to the handle, 5 1/2” tall to the top of knob. A little addition to “clobbering” : A single color transfer item may be hand painted inside the confines of the design ( like petals and leaves) and glazed. This was called “ clobbering”. It is speculated that clobbering was developed in response to the cry by out of work artisans who had been replaced by transfer printing.
