'Last of the Conquerors' handles the explosive theme of Negro GI's in Occupied Germany--their experiences with the men, women and girls of that defeated country. From inside Front Cover: "Now I know what it is to walk into any place, any place, without worrying about whether the serve colored. You ain't been here long enough to feel that like I do. You know what the hell I learned? That a nigger ain't no different from nobody else....They don't teach that stuff back in the land of the free." In Occupied Berlin, Negro soldiers were treated in a way that they had never been treated at home. The enemy they had been taught to hate invited them into their homes. Blonde frauleins admired the color of their skin, the texture of their hair; slept with them, fell in love with them, married them. Not unnaturally it seemed a paradise to many of these soldiers, from both sides of the Mason-Dixon line. Not unnaturally many of them hated to go home; understandably some deserted to the Russian sector. Hayes Dawkins, the hero of this novel, reluctantly accepted the friendship of the Germans, slowly overcame his distrust of all white people, unbelievingly accepted the love of his blue-eyed Ilse, in spite of himself came to love her in return. When he was sent from Berlin to Bremburg, known as a "niggar hell", and commanded by crackers, he was to learn the utmost humiliation and helplessness--not only as a member of a minority group, but as an incompetently commanded enlisted man. The decision that he is finally forced to make--between two worlds--is difficult, but its outcome is tragically inevitable.
