Sometimes, it works: "Become One Anything One Time" is lazy in all the right ways, bedecked with xylophones and a lackadaisical guitar style that recalls the sun-kissed lilt of 's "Range Life", while "Wait Until April" incorporates pump organ into its harmonious design. With the Promise Ring ploughing an increasingly meek furrow, however, it's hard to know exactly who this album is going to appeal to: with frontman Davey Vonbohlen singing lines such as "So if I had a dime for / Every time I / Should stop playing guitar and / Put my head in a book" on the thoughtful "Stop Playing Guitar", those who really want to rock out might feel slightly disenfranchised.
