Word Pictures in the New Testament by A.T. Robertson (1863-1934), was originally published in six volumes (over 2,700 pages). Written 43 years after Vincent's Word Studies in the New Testament, Robertson’s work incorporates additional insights gained from more recent methods of comparative grammar which shed a flood of new light on the correct meaning of New Testament forms and idioms. A.T. Robertson's Word Pictures in the New Testament has a reputation as being the magnum opus of the best works on New Testament word study. Providing verse-by-verse commentary, it stresses meaningful and pictorial nuances implicit in the Greek but often lost in translation. And for those who do not know Greek, exegetical material and interpretive insights are directly connected with studies in the original text. All Greek words are transliterated. Word Pictures in the New Testament brings to scholars, pastors, and lay Bible teachers interpretive insights on words and phrases from each book of the New Testament from one of the outstanding biblical scholars of the twentieth century. The material is arranged book by book, beginning with chapter one of the book and moving sequentially through the book. This treasure trove represents a lifetime of careful, insightful scholarship that will enrich personal study, preaching, and teaching throughout the twenty-first century. Robertson's Word Pictures is not a formal commentary, but rather a discussion of Bible words selected for their richness and usefulness to the average student of God’s Word. In such discussions, he uses a number of methods. At times he investigates the lexical or grammatical meaning of a word, and at other times he brings insight gained from archaeological discoveries. He then may examine a word’s contextual meaning, picking apart every nuance surrounding a word or group of words, even analyzing what the mood of the passage might suggest, all to better understand the word’s meaning in the original Greek. Robertson's ultimate desire is to take the "word pictures" of New Testament Greek and make these pictures of the past alive again today, thus leading the modern reader closer to an understanding of the Living Word of God. About the Author: A. T. (Archibald Thomas) Robertson, American Baptist New Testament scholar, was born near Chatham, Virginia. Converted at age 13, he was licensed to preach at age 16. In 1895 he was elected to succeed John A. Broadus as professor of New Testament interpretation at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. He held this position until his death in 1934. Robertson's greatest contribution to biblical scholarship was in the field of New Testament Greek. In 1914 he published his monumental 1,454-page Grammar of the Greek New Testament, the largest and most comprehensive New Testament grammar ever published. (also available from us as a CD ebook!)
