Description: Title of the map:"MAPMONDE OU DESCRIPTION GENERALE DU GLOBE TERRESTRE" Large antique copper engraved world map by Henri Abraham CHATELAIN (1684-1743). This unusual world map shows California as an island; The Island of California refers to a long-held global misconception, dating from the 16th century, that California was not part of mainland North America but rather a large island separated from the continent by a strait now known as the Gulf of California. One of the most famous cartographic errors in history, it was propagated on many maps during the 17th and 18th centuries, despite contradictory evidence from various explorers. The legend was initially infused with the idea that California was a terrestrial paradise, like the Garden of Eden or Atlantis. This mapping error was not a one-off event. From the mid-1500s to the late 1700s great controversy surrounded the geography of California. The routes of many explorers around the world are written. Each side of the map, the representation of the sun by Kircher, and the representation of the moon by Cassini. On this map, Australia is rattached to the Antarctic which is named "Terres Australes Inconnues". New Zealand is not represented. In lower part, a table shows the list of the countries of the 4 continents. In lower center, the explication of the terms of geography. Henri Abraham Chatelain (1684-1743) was a parisian Huguenot pastor. His famous work is the "Atlas Historique", published in seven volumes. Originally published in Amsterdam between 1705 and 1720 by L'Honoré et Châtelain, L'Atlas Historique was corrected, increased and republished until 1739, the date of the fourth and last edition. This encyclopedic work explains the history and the genealogy of the continents, with the geography, cosmography, topography, heraldry, and ethnography. The text is from Nicolas Gueudeville, a French geographer.Henri Chatelain represents the golden age of French cartography.
