Description: Early to mid 1940’s American Scene / Regionalism / Social Realist lithograph by Great Depression era WPA artist Georges Schreiber (Am., 1904-1977) depicting agricultural / farm workers or sharecroppers heading out of the field and entitled “Going Home”.Unframed stone lithograph signed in pencil by Schreiber lower right. Untouched, unrestored condition; has never been out of the matting since it was sold by Associated American Artists (AAA) Galleries, 711 Fifth Avenue, New York City. Comes with original back papering with labels. No frame, no glass. This print isn’t dated. One museum says it’s from the 30’s and other folks say it’s from the mid 40’s. I saw this same AAA label on a John Steuart Curry litho, “John Brown”, which also has people claiming different years (1939 and 1940). Per the story in the label, it seems to me the print would have been done in 1943 at the earliest but no later than ‘47 because AAA’s label changed then to include a Beverly Hills, CA gallery location. As you can see, the workers, who I think are African American, have tools such as rake and scythe: they were harvesting something such as corn, wheat, hay or rice.Image size: 9 1/4 x 13 3/8 inches. Sheet size: 11 x 15 1/2 inches. Overall size with matting is a standard size 16 x 20 inches. Approx. 80 year old litho would need paper conservation w/ cleaning and minor touch-in to make it perfecto. AAA prints were done in editions limited to 250 proofs.Georges Schreiber was close friends with his next door neighbor in Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts, the leader of American Scene art, Thomas Hart Benton.See picture posted of the two artists together. They were commissioned and collaborated to do World War II posters for the Army and Navy, encouraging people to buy war bonds. When comparing the works of Benton and Schreiber, many similarities are visible in style and content. They were like two peas in a pod.For three years, beginning in 1936 and in the employ of the WPA, Schreiber made trips touring the USA painting and sketching Americans in all the 48 continental states. He exhibited these paintings, called “Panorama of America”, at the Associated American Artists gallery. His show was so successful that all the works were sold before the show even opened.I can get you close to Thomas Hart Benton with this and one or two other artworks in my eBay Store, but to date I’ve never found anything by him. A 1949 painting by Benton of the harvesting subject fetched 4.7 million dollars at Christie’s in 2015. Maybe we’ll score one someday, but in the meantime, here’s one by his best pal Schreiber.
