Please see the picture of the contents page for more detail. The author was a RAF bomber pilot. I skimmed the book and he mentions he is in 12th Squadron and he flies the Fairly Battle aircraft. This is a three man bomber. In 1940 he is shot down on a raid and is severely burned on his hands. It appears his burns are so severe he is actually paroled from prison and returned to England. At the time of the books writing he still could not use his fingers or hands and dictated the book on a new machine. The following I pulled off a 12th squadron history website; No. 12 Squadron began the war as part of the Advanced Air Striking Force, making it one of the first squadrons to be sent to France. The Fairey Battle suffered very heavy loses during the Battle of France. No. 12 Squadron was one of several squadrons to lose almost their entire strength of aircraft during the fighting in France
