Description: A most attractive & rare example of a World War One British Army Coloured Enamel Sweetheart Brooch for the loved one of a member of The Hampshire Regiment 1914-1918 Originally raised in 1702 as the 37th Regiment of Foot, (later The Hampshire Regiment), when World War One broke out in 1914 the men of our County of Hampshire answered the call to support the army's regulars. Portsmouth in particular was able to raise 2 Pal’s Battalions (recruited at Fratton Park football ground) and they soon became known as ‘The Pompey Pals’ Meanwhile the regulars of Hampshire Regiment’s 1st Battalion were despatched to France in 1914, (joined by 2nd Battalion in 1916,) and between war’s outbreak in 1914 and the Armistice in November 1918fought in the Battles of The Marne, Aisne, Messines, Ypres, Somme, Passchendaele & Arras.. amongst others.2nd Battalion, before arriving in France in 1916, also took part in the Landings at Gallipoli in 1915 During World War One the Hampshire Regiment was also able to raise 31 Reserve, Territorial & New Army Battalions who also served at home, on The Western Front, in India, Mesopotamia, Salonika & Egypt. Measuring just over 1" in length,and in very good order, this is a most attractive wee loved-one's Great War Hampshire Regiment rare pattern pin-back brooch in an excellent issued condition.
