Description: This is an extremely rare, and perhaps one-of-a-kind image World War One U.S. Navy image. This is a photo brought back from WWI by a US Navy sailor named Joseph Mondzelski of Parson, PA who appears to have served aboard destroyer tender USS Black Hawk and/or USS Lake, largely in Scotland (Kirkwall/Orkney islands). He also took photos of USS Lakeview, a transport ship that operated near Scotland too, and appears to have been familiar with that crew. Type & Size: A 4x2.5 original photograph. Condition: The back side of most photos in this lot have remnants from being glued in a scrapbook. Please see photos for condition. The photo features a young US Navy sailor in uniform standing at the helm of a ship, capturing a moment likely taken during his service in 1918. The backdrop suggests a naval environment, with the sailor dressed in traditional attire complete with a hat. This image likely connects to Joseph Mondzelski's experiences aboard destroyer tender ships such as the USS Black Hawk and/or USS Lake, during the latter stages of World War I. In 1918, the US Navy was heavily involved in supporting operations in Europe, particularly around Scotland where many ships were stationed. Sailors often faced challenging conditions both on and off the sea. Joseph Mondzelski?s service during this period would have involved not only participating in naval operations but also experiencing life on a ship, contributing to maritime duties and potentially aiding in troop and supply transport.
