Description: Description [Recommended by director Sunao Katabuchi of “In This Corner of the World”] Approximately 350 precious black-and-white photographs from before and after the war are colored by hand using the latest AI technology and based on interviews with the people involved and documents. The life of those days comes to life once again through colorization. ■Message from the author This book contains ``colorized'' photographs from before and after the war. Photographs from that time were exclusively black and white. Our eyes have become accustomed to color photographs, but black and white photographs give us an inorganic, static, and ``frozen'' impression. Doesn't this distance us from war and deprive us of the opportunity to think about it as something personal? We are currently working on the ``Memory Thawing'' project, which uses AI (artificial intelligence) and human collaboration to colorize photos and create a place for dialogue. The state of Hiroshima, Okinawa, and Japan before the war. From the beginning of the war to the Pacific Theater, the Battle of Okinawa, the air raids, the dropping of the atomic bomb, and the end of the war. After automatic colorization, approximately 350 colorized photos are included, which were completed based on conversations with photo providers, materials, historical research on SNS, etc. It seems like my happy life is being eroded little by little. The devastation of war becomes a daily reality. And hope was born from the ruins of the fire. We hope that you will be able to think about past events as you turn over each leaf and look at it. (Hidenori Watanabe) The summer of my first year of high school. I met Tokuzo Hamai at Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park. Before the war, Mr. Hamai's birthplace ran the ``Hamai Barber Museum'' in the Nakajima area. The Nakajima district is the current location of Peace Park, and before the atomic bomb was dropped, it was a downtown area with a population of 4,400 people. When Mr. Hamai was shown an important album that he had brought with him to his evacuation site, he discovered that it contained approximately 250 black and white photographs of happy daily life with his family before the war. I started working on colorization because I wanted families to always feel close to each other. Since then, the connection with the former residents of the Nakajima area has gradually expanded, and the various ``colors of memory'' that have been revived through materials and dialogue are being recreated. When publishing the photo book, I personally selected the photos from the children's perspective. I wanted to convey that war involves not only those fighting on the battlefield, but also ordinary citizens, including children. With the thoughts of Mr. Hamai and others in the Nakajima area, who were left alone forever without being able to say their final farewells to their families... Through this book, I want you to imagine war and peace as your own. I also hope that each of them will convey their feelings to their dear friends and family. This is now a new way for me to convey the ``feelings and memories'' of people who experienced war.
