Description: An explanation of the purpose of the goggles worn by the aircrews shown in the photos accompanying this listing: Steeped in anticipation, Royal Air Force night fighter pilots gather in the rest hut, their faces concealed behind darkened goggles. The year is 1941, amidst the chaos of World War II. As they prepare for another daring mission under the full moon's watchful gaze, these brave aviators understand the importance of preserving their vision in darkness. IA loyal canine companion rests beside them, providing solace and companionship during moments of respite. The dog's unwavering loyalty mirrors that of these valiant pilots who risk their lives to protect our skies. The purpose behind wearing darkened goggles becomes evident as we delve deeper into their significance. By donning these specialized glasses within the rest hut, the pilots ensure that their eyes are already adjusted to darkness when they venture outside into an abyss devoid of light. This meticulous preparation allows them to swiftly adapt and engage with enemy aircraft without compromising on visual acuity. General information (far less poetic): These are the first issued type of goggle used to preserve night vision for RAF aircrew flying at night. Later versions had vents at the side to stop them fogging up and eventually somebody somewhere realised that green lenses were the wrong choice to properly fulfil this task and so later on crews were issued the same/similar kit but with red lenses. These are the genuine article, a used item from the Second World War. They are a great addition to any militaria collection or, if the mood takes you, an excellent fashion accessory to wear when strutting through town or in a pub trying to impress the ladies - assuming the ladies who would be attracted to a chap wearing these goggles have been allowed out on a day pass from whichever institution they have been incarcerated in. Oh, the elastic is knackered. That’s fine if they are in a display cabinet, but if you want to wear them you will have to replace the elastic or walk around looking up into the sky so that they don’t fall off your face.
