Description: WWI EraFrance General Charles ManginSigned Photo Charles Mangin was a French General. He graduated from St. Cyr in 1888 and then pursued a career in France's colonial military empire. He served in the Sudan and commanded the advance guard during the Marchand Expedition, 1890 to 1894. From 1901 to 1904, he served in Indo-China and in West Africa, 1907 to 1911. At the start of World War I, he was appointed a Colonel in command of a brigade in the 5th Army and took part in the battles in Artois in 1915. Known as an aggressive commander, he was promoted General of the 5th Army in December, 1916 and planned the final French offensive attacks that recaptured a number of forts lost early in the year. In 1917, he was placed in command of the 6th Army on the Western Front. In July 1918, he was placed in command of the French western flank of the Aisne-Marne Offensive which forced the Germans to pull back resulting in the series of Allied offensives that finally won the war. After the war, he was put in command of the French occupation forces in the Rhineland to create an independent pro-French Rhenish republic on the western bank of the Rhine.
