The vast majority of Germans in World War II were Catholics. Like many funeral services today, a small card (usually baseball card size) were printed with a photo and brief history of the deceased. This custom has existed for several centuries and was very prevalent during the Second World War. This particular card was printed in remembrance of: Johann Österbauer Johann was a Private in the motorized infantry and was mortally wounded during an artillery strike on March 12, 1944 at the age of 21. He is pictured in a studio portrait proudly wearing his Iron Cross 2nd Class from the second button hole. If you have any questions or concerns, do not hesitate to contact us.
