Several manufacturers made bayonets during WWII such as Hikari Seiki Seisakusho, Matsushita Kinzoku, Riken Kozai, Toyokawa Kaigun kosho and Toyoda Jido Shokki Seisakusho (Toyoda Automatic Loom Works). Early bayonets had the hooked quillion, fullered blade, contoured grips with escutcheons screws and birds head pommel. Later bayonets removed the quillion, fuller and had a straight wood grip as they tried to save time to crank out the bayonets. This one is an early war bayonet. Overall, this bayonet is in Good - Very Good condition, considering its age and history. The press catch is functional with stiff spring tension. The pommel and guard are securely fastened to the tang. They both have oxidation. The metal has turned a dark gray patina color with some finish loss along the leading edges. The screw escutcheons securely fasten the grips. They have oxidized and the slots are full of oxidation too. The grip panels have scattered chips, compressions, draglines and scrapes. The wood has darkened with age. The spine, sides and fullers have oxidation and scrapes, most notably is the oxidation on the right side. There are no nicks or dings but the blade has been sharpened at some point. The tip is intact and comes to a sharp straight point. The finish is in the white and some of it remains. The right ricasso has the manufacturer marking two circles within a circle (Nagoya Rikugun Zoheisho - Nagoya Army Ministry Armory). The back of the pommel is marked with Kanji characters and the serial number "25741". The scabbard is NOT included. This bayonet will be a great addition to your Japanese rifle, or a bayonet collection in general. As with all used items, a light cleaning may be necessary to meet your standards.
