UKRAINIAN DIVISION "GALICIA" (Lviv region): HISTORY, MEMORIES, PHOTOSThe illustrated photo book on 840 pages contains about two thousand biographical references of the natives of Lviv region of Ukraine, who during 1343-45 fought in the division "HALYCHYNA", died or went through all the military actions. The book contains many unique archival photographs and documents of that time. The "HALYCHYNA" (also known as “Galicia”) Division was a Ukrainian military formation in the German armed forces during World War II. The division was organized as part of a program of creating foreign formations of the Waffen SS to fight on the Soviet front. The Ukrainian Central Committee supported the division’s formation regarding it as a Ukrainian armed force and hoping to influence its character and organization as the core of a future national army. Its formation was announced on 28 April 1943 and in march 1945 the Galicia Division was reformed as the First Division of the Ukrainian National Army under General Petro Shandruk. The basis of the collection is scientific research on certain aspects of the life of divisional officers, reinforced by a block of memories of its immediate participants. Its special component is about two thousand biographical records of natives of Lviv Oblast who, during 1943-1945, fought as part of the "Halychyna" division, died or went through its entire thorny path. The publication is rich in unique photographs, historical documents of the period of the division's operation, as well as photos from the organizational activities of the Lviv station of the Galician Brotherhood of former soldiers of the 1st UD "Halychyna" of the Ukrainian National Army in 1992-2016.
