Description: A short description to the picture portfolio, 1992 Pict. 1: A graphic picture of a drawing made by J.G. Hedman 3: A large songfestival kept in 1894 att Vallarna in Gamla Vasa. In the middle of the picture you can see the composer Armas Jrnefelt (who has composed the symphony poem "Korsholma" wich were performed for the first time at the festival) and his sister Aino (who had married Jean Sibelius in 1892) 4: The hospital building is the only building in Vasa that the architect Carl Ludvig Engel has designed, exept for the small customsgate wich you can find at what nowdays is called sdra tullen (the southern customs). You can also find it in picture no. 1, back then it was a sentry box used by the russian troups and it was placed in an open space at the townsquare. The other building was an orthodox chapel. During the fire soldiers were throwing water on it, that is why it is still standing. The well called Kungsladugrdens brunn (The Kingbarn Well), situated in a gravelridge, is nowdays filled up but water is still trickling out into a ditch that leads to kanalen (the canal). The elementaryschool teacher and hunter Evert Kull was for 19 years dreaming about a pool in Gamla Vasa. In the summer of 1939 his dream came true! The access to water was good and swimmingcompetitions and divingshows was kept there all the time. In the autumn of 1939 the vinterkrig (winter war) started and Kull was killed in action. He is buried in a soldiergrave in front of Korsholms kyrka (the curch of Korsholm). A child drowned in the pool and russian prisoners of war from the POW camp situated at Hovrttsbacken were allowed to swim there. Nobody cared to maintain the pool anymore so it fell into despair. 5: The corner of Hovrttsesplanaden - Handelsesplanaden near the turn of the century. A well with a pavillion and a horsecab station. 6: Hartman's house is completed. The horsecabs has now been replaced by taxicars. 7: Sthl's cafe on the terrace in Hartman's house. 8: vre torget (the upper square) the buildings mainly designed by architect K.A. Setterberg. It was replaced in the year of 1960 by Rewell Center.
