Smith (1885-1927) studied at the University of Kansas and the University of Jena, at the latter of which he studied under Dr. Ernst Haeckel. He was the Sunday editor of The Chicago Tribune before coming to New York in 1912. In addition to being on the staff of The New York Sunday World, he also wrote on criminology for The Saturday Evening Post, Collier's, and other periodicals. His other books are Famous Poison Mysteries, Con, Mysteries of the Missing, and The New Criminology.
