Description: This Hopi cookie jar was made by Zella Cheeda (1901-1997). She was also known as “Antelope Woman” and signed her pottery with an antelope hallmark. She was from Sichomovi village on First Mesa (between Walpi and Hano). The pot is 8 3/4" tall including the lid and 8 1/4" across. It comes with the Museum of Northern Arizona tag for the Hopi Craftsman Exhibition which took place in July 1981. It identifies Zella as the maker and that it is a cookie jar. It also come with the 2nd place ribbon that she won in the exhibition for this pot. The pot is in good condition with some minor scuffing of paint. There is also some minor surface cracks from the firing. These don't go through the pot and are minor. I needed magnification to see them. Otherwise this pot is in great vintage condition. This jar is coil built and the black designs were painted with bee-weed. This jar has her iconic bird on each side. The jar was traditionally fired and is signed on the bottom and the underside of the lid with her hallmark, an antelope.
