ZURQIEH - The Money that Conquered the Holy Land in the First Crusade. $8.90

Description: The Money that Conquered the Holy Land in the First Crusade: Italy. Lucca. Enrico III. IV or V (1039-1125). AR Denaro AVERAGE 0.72 GM At the time of the First Crusade (1096-1099) Lucca was the capital of the Marquisate of Tuscany in Central Italy and owed nominal allegiance to the Holy Roman Emperors. The city was famous for its possession of the Volto Santo (“Holy Face”)—a life-sized wooden image of the crucified Christ that was reputed to have been carved by Nicodemus, the secret disciple of Jesus. This relic made Lucca an important stop on the Via Francigena pilgrimage route to Rome. The armies of the First Crusade are not known to have passed through Lucca on their way to take ship for the Holy Land in 1096, yet the denari of Lucca are explicitly named by the chronicler Raymond of Aguilers along with six other European denari as “our money” (i.e., the money that the Crusaders brought with them). Indeed, the coins of Lucca are frequently found in the Holy Land—most notably in a hoard buried after the capture of Antioch from the Seljuks in 1098 and on the sites of the Crusader coastal bases at Caesarea Maritima and Acre. It has been suggested that Luccese deniers may have first come with the Pisan fleet that assisted in the siege of Latakia in 1099 and became a preferred coinage of the First Crusade. The denari of Lucca feature an immobilized inscriptional type that originates in the late 1040s and reflects the city’s inclusion in the Holy Roman Empire. The legends name the deceased Emperor Henry III (1046-1056) but feature the crude and debased monogram of Otto III (983-1002). The importance of Luccese coins to the Crusader struggle to reclaim the Holly Land for western Christendom is amply illustrated by the presence of the coins in quantity in Middle Eastern hoards buried as late as the time of the Second Crusade (1147-1149).
